SPPCS Commissioner Attends Pacific Transnational Crime Network Capacity Development Forum
The Samoa Police, Prisons & Corrections Services (SPPCS) Commissioner, Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo, is currently attending the Pacific Transnational Crime Network (PTCN) Capacity Development Forum (CDF) held from 11 to 15 November 2024 in Vanuatu. As the Chair of the PTCN, Commissioner Auapa’au is accompanied by officers from the SPPCS and members of the Pacific Transnational Crime Coordination Centre (PTCCC) based in Samoa. This key event brings together law enforcement leaders and partners from across the Pacific region, with a shared mission to enhance security and counter transnational criminal threats impacting Pacific nations.
The theme of the forum, “Strengthening collaboration and partnerships to effectively respond to transnational and regional maritime threats in the Pacific,” underscores the urgent need for cooperative strategies and improved coordination among Pacific nations to tackle transnational crime. With rising concerns over maritime security, illegal fishing, narcotics trafficking, human trafficking, and other illicit activities, the PTCN Capacity Development Forum serves as a platform to assess current challenges, share best practices, and develop more effective response measures.
The forum agenda includes sessions focused on the latest trends in transnational crime, the role of advanced technology in enforcement, and the necessity of data sharing among agencies. Workshops and strategy sessions will address specialized topics, including intelligence-led policing, maritime surveillance, and partnership models that leverage the strengths of regional organizations.
As PTCN Chair, Commissioner Auapa’au’s leadership is pivotal in advancing regional efforts to combat transnational crime. During the forum, he will lead discussions on fostering greater collaboration, enhancing operational capacities, and building resilient, adaptable frameworks to respond to evolving criminal tactics. His delegation will also engage with partner agencies, strengthening Samoa’s ties within the network and reinforcing its commitment to maintaining a secure Pacific region.
Established to combat cross-border crime within the Pacific, the PTCN operates as a collaborative force among Pacific nations, pooling resources, intelligence, and expertise. Its focus on capacity building and intelligence sharing has proven essential in countering the growing threats posed by organized crime syndicates. This forum exemplifies the network’s commitment to empowering each member nation and enhancing collective security across maritime boundaries.
The SPPCS remains dedicated to protecting Samoa’s communities from the impacts of transnational crime and actively participates in regional forums and initiatives to bolster its resources, training, and international partnerships.
The SPPCS and its leadership look forward to the outcomes of this forum and the continued strength of collaboration among Pacific nations to safeguard the region’s peace, security, and sovereignty.
