Samoa Police Welcomes New Recruits with Ava Ceremony at Tafaigata Academy
The Samoa Police, Prisons & Corrections Services formally welcomed its new intake of recruits through a traditional ‘ava ceremony held at the Police Academy in Tafaigata. The new intake consists of 51 members of 10 females and 41 males.
The ceremony reflected values of faaaloalo, amio pulea and tautua – principles that underpin the work of Samoa Police Prisons and Correction Services. It also served as a reminder that policing in Samoa is not only a profession, but a duty grounded in service to the community and the nation. Also highlighted the close connection between Samoan culture and modern policing, reinforcing the expectation that officers serve with humility and honor.
During the ceremony, Police executives emphasized the importance of integrity, commitment, and teamwork, urging the recruits to uphold the law with fairness and compassion while respecting Samoan traditions and cultural values.
The new recruits officially commenced their training at the Tafaigata Academy where they will undergo physical, academic and ethical training for 16 weeks; in preparation for their roles as future Alii | Tamaitai Malu o le Malo o Samoa.
