SAMOA POLICE, PRISONS, AND CORRECTIONS SERVICES (SPPCS) RECOGNIZED FOR SUCCESSFUL RESCUE OPERATION
Apia, Samoa – Thursday, 14 November 2024
The Minister of Police, Hon. Faualo Harry Jeffrey Schuster, and Acting Commissioner of Police, Prisons and Corrections Services (SPPCS) Lafaitele H.S. Aati, today welcomed New Zealand Chief of Defense, Air Marshal Tony Davies, to the Samoa Police Maritime Wing. The purpose of the visit was to formally present commendation certificates recognizing the outstanding efforts and professionalism demonstrated during the successful search and rescue operation for the crew of HMNZ Manawanui.
The HMNZ Manawanui ran aground off the coast of Samoa on 5 October 2024, with 75 crew members on board. This complex rescue operation involved a collaborative effort by the Samoa Police Maritime Wing, Australian Defense Advisor Jared Williams, the crew of the Double Down vessel, and local civilian Lui Nifo.
In his opening remarks, Minister Schuster extended his gratitude to the governments of New Zealand and Australia for their ongoing support of Samoa’s Police Maritime Wing. He acknowledged the invaluable contributions of Air Marshal Tony Davies, Australian Defense Advisor Jared Williams, and local partners in ensuring the success of the rescue operation.
“This commendation presentation is not only a recognition of the bravery and commitment shown by those involved but also a reaffirmation of the strong partnerships between Samoa, New Zealand, and Australia in ensuring a secure and resilient Blue Pacific,” Minister Schuster said.
The Minister also commended the leadership of Acting Commissioner Aati and the professionalism of the Police Maritime Wing, noting their courage, resilience, and dedication to their mission.
Acting Commissioner Lafaitele H.S. Aati expressed his gratitude in receiving the commendation on behalf of the Samoa Police, Prisons, and Corrections Services. He acknowledged the collective efforts of the Police Maritime staff, the Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA), Australian Defense Advisor Jared Williams, and the local community.
“This operation’s success was due to the extensive training undertaken by our Maritime staff, their local knowledge of our seas, and, above all, our unwavering faith in God,” Acting Commissioner Aati stated. “While the commendation is a great honor, the greatest reward was ensuring the safety of all 75 crew members of HMNZ Manawanui. We simply did what we were trained to do.”
The presentation ceremony not only celebrated the bravery and professionalism displayed during the rescue operation but also highlighted the significance of international collaboration in maintaining maritime safety and security.
Air Marshal Tony Davies praised the dedication and expertise of all involved and emphasized the importance of partnerships in addressing challenges in the Pacific region.
The Samoa Police, Prisons, and Corrections Services remain committed to working alongside international and regional partners to ensure the safety and security of Samoa’s maritime domain.
