Nevada National Guard and Samoa Police Begin Law Enforcement, Corrections, and Mental Health Exchange Program
Apia, Samoa – Monday, 9 September 2024: The Opening Program for the Nevada National Guard – Samoa Police, Prisons & Corrections Services (SPPCS) – Law Enforcement, Corrections, and Mental Health Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE) was held today at the Samoa Police Training Academy.
The event commenced with welcoming remarks delivered by Deputy Commissioner Leiataua Samuelu Afamasaga, followed by an opening prayer from Principal Corrections Officer Mautofiga Tuu’u, which set the tone for the program.
The SMEE course briefing was conducted by Major Luis Muruato of the Nevada Provost Marshall, who provided an overview of the training objectives. He highlighted key components of the exchange program, which focuses on enhancing law enforcement strategies, correctional facility management, and mental health support within the justice system.
The Chargè d’affaires from the United States Embassy, Mr. Daniel Tarapacki, was the keynote speaker, underlining the importance of the partnership between the United States and Samoa in fostering collaboration in these crucial areas. The program was officially opened by Commissioner Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo, who emphasized the significance of this exchange in enhancing the capabilities of SPPCS personnel.
This collaborative initiative reflects a strong commitment to developing law enforcement and correctional services in Samoa. The exchange will enable SPPCS personnel to gain valuable insights into best practices from their counterparts in Nevada, focusing on improving operational efficiency, mental health awareness, and community engagement.
The program is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Samoa’s law enforcement capacity, with the goal of building a safer and more resilient nation.
