The Samoa Police, Prisons and Correction Services (SPPCS) today marked the conclusion of its annual rehabilitation calendar with a vibrant End-of-Year Program held at Tanumalaa Prisons, bringing together prisoners, correctional staff, government officials, and dignitaries in a show of unity and commitment to second chances.
The program, is designed as part of ongoing rehabilitation initiatives, featured cultural performances, skits, and presentations of handicrafts by prisoners highlighting the progress of vocational and educational training offered throughout the year. Prisoners showcased skills learned in carpentry, agriculture, arts, and music, underscoring the SPPCS mission to prepare inmates for reintegration into society.
Police Acting Commissioner Leiataua Samuelu Afamasaga reiterated the vision of correctional facilities as a place of transformation rather than punishment alone.
The End-of-Year Program also served as a platform to recognize inmates who excelled in training programs – symbolizing the tangible steps prisoners are taking toward productive futures.
Family members of inmates were invited to witness the event, reinforcing the importance of community support in rehabilitation. The atmosphere was described as both celebratory and reflective, with prayers and blessings offered for continued progress.
As Samoa continues to strengthen its correctional system, initiatives like the End-of-Year Program highlight government’s commitment to holistic rehabilitation. By combining vocational training, cultural identity, and spiritual guidance, the program aims to reduce barriers for inmates returning to society.
The event was closed with a communal meal shared by officials, staff, and inmates — a symbolic gesture of unity and reconciliation.
Samoa Prisons and its inmates wish our community a very Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.
