Getting a drivers license

    • Types of Driver Licences

    • Get a New Driver Licence

      Temporary Driver Licence (tdl)

      Visitors to Samoa with a valid driver’s licence from their home country can apply for a Samoan Temporary Driver’s Licence. Note that it is prohibited to issue a TDL for Restricted/Learner/Provisional overseas Driver Licences.

      • You can apply for a TDL at the Police Office Vaitele, Police Office Salelologa Savaii, Authorised Car Rental companies and the Samoa Post Office in Apia.
      • Provide a valid overseas full driver licence
      • Pay prescribed fee ($21 tala for 1 month TDL, $42 tala for 2 month TDL)
      • TDL is a paper permit and must be hand carried together with overseas Driver Licence at all times when Driving on Samoa’s Roads.
      Learner Driver Licence

      A person must be at least 16 years old to be eligible for a Learner’s Driver Licence . A Learner Licence can only be used to drive a light private vehicle less than 3 tons tare weight. The vehicle must also display the letter “L” on the front and back. It is mandatory that someone with a valid driver licence accompanies this person in the front passenger seat at all times while this person is learning to drive.

      • You can apply for a Learner Driver Licence at the Police Office Vaitele
      • Provide Identification Documents (Birth Certificate/Passport).
      • Sit the Learner Theory Test
      • Pay prescribed fee ($79 tala valid for 3 months only renewable for up 1 yr)
      • Take Photo and capture electronic signature, Driver licence will be released on the same day.
      Private Driver Licence

      A person must be at least 17 years old to be eligible for a Private Driver Licence. A Private Licence can only be used to drive a motor cycle or light private vehicle less than 3 tons tare weight or a light goods vehicle less than 3 tons tare weight. There are two methods to getting a Private Driver Licence:

      Method 1: Conversion of overseas Driver Licence

      1. Provide a valid full overseas Driver Licence to Police.
      2. Pay prescribed fee $284.00 Conversion fee
      • Take Photo and capture electronic signature, Driver licence will be released on the same day

      IMPORTANT NOTICE: Conversion of overseas driver license may not be approved if Driver Licence is not in English or if the Driver Licence is faded or damaged. Applicant may still need   to take a practical test. In the event a practical test is conducted you will need to pay the prescribed fee of  $315.00.

      Method 2:Registration for Theory and Practical Tests

      1. Registration are done on Mondays, Tuesday or Fridays 9 – 10:30am. Applicant must provide Identification Document (Passport or Birth Certificate)
      2. Applicant registers with the Driver Licensing Unit
      • Class and written Theory Test – 10:30 am – 12pm (Must bring your own pen)
      1. If Theory Test passed you can take the practical test the following day (15 to 20 minutes, must bring your own vehicle)
      2. Pay prescribed fee for New Driver License – $173 for Samoan Residents and $315 for overseas residents
      3. Take Photo and capture electronic signature, Driver license will be released on the day the fee is paid.

      IMPORTANCE NOTICE: Please note 17 – 20 yr old applicants will be issued with a Driver License with class B (Private Motor Car), Only when an applicant is 21 yrs old or older can he/she be issued with both class B and Class E (Light Goods Vehicle less than 3 tons tare weight). The class and condition issued is also dependant on the type of vehicle used during the Practical test. If Theory Test or Practical Test fails the Authority will determine the day for the Retest. All applicants who will sit the Retest will need to pay the Retest fee of $32 and re-register for the test with the Driver Licensing Unit.

       

      Commercial Driver License

      To obtain a Commercial Drivers Licence, applicant must register with the Driver Licensing Unit. Registration is done on Wednesday 9am – 10am. Applicants must provide:

      • Private Driver Licence
      • Police Report
      • $37 Defensive Driving Course fee
      1. Class and Written Theory Test are done on Wednesdays and Thursdays (must bring your own pen)
      2. If Theory Test passed you can take the practical test the following day (15 to 20 minutes, must bring the relevant Commercial Vehicle)
      3. Pay prescribed fee for New Commercial Licence – $74.00 per class
      4. Take Photo and capture electronic signature, Driver licence will be released on the day the fee is paid.
    • Temporary Driver Licence Booklet (for Rental Vehicles)

      For a rental company to apply for Temporary Driver’s Licence booklet:

      1. First initial application of TDL booklets must be requested in writing to CEO.
      2. Application must include a valid business licence.
      3. Must possess a minimum of 10 rental vehicles.

    • Renew Your Driver Licence

      Learner Driver Licence

      Learner driver licences can only be renewed to up to a year after a year the applicant must apply for a full private driver licence.

      • Provide your current Learner Driver Licence or Identification (Birth Cert or Passport)
      • Pay prescribed fee ($79.00)
      • Take new Photo and capture electronic signature, Driver licence will be released on the day the fee has being paid
      Private Driver Licence

      Private driver licences can only be renewed if the applicant is in country and present to take new photo and enter signature.

      • Provide your current Private Driver Licence or Identification (Birth Cert or Passport)
      • Pay prescribed fee ($142.00)
      • Take new Photo and capture electronic signature, Driver licence will be released on the day the fee is paid.
      Commercial Driver Licence

      Commercial driver licences can only be renewed if the applicant is in country and present to take new photo and enter signature.

      • Provide your current Commercial Driver Licence or Identification (Birth Certificate or Passport)
      • Provide Police Report at least a week old and a Confirmation letter from Justice if Required.
      • Pay prescribed fee ($26.00 per Class)
      • Take new Photo and capture electronic signature, Driver licence will be released on the day the fee is paid.
